Anyone See Pink Floyd?

Last night on Channel 7 (ABC) was the Live 8 concert/Africa awareness show. Pink Floyd took the stage with Roger Waters on bass…first time in some 20+ years. Right next to RW was David Gilmour. They didn’t seem to look at each other during their set, but they wern’t throwing things at each other, so I guess it was a success.

I actually didn’t know the concert would be on last night, but by chance my wife turned it on right in the middle of the PF set. Thank you, Ericka. They sounded quite good in my opinion. I would have liked to hear their introduction, and if any words were exchanged on stage. So, did anyone else see it? What did I miss, and what are your thoughts on the performace (and are you pissed that ABC cut off the end of “Money”)?

I didn’t quite catch this but was told Roger said something like “it’s great to play with the band again.”

It was hard to watch it through the tears in my eyes. I’m not sure if I was so moved by the nostalgia or by the realisation that we are all getting older very fast.

They did the first track from “Dark Side of the Moon” and then Roger Waters said “Thank you!” as they went straight into “Money” (Gilmour vocals on both). After that, they started the intro to “Wish You Were Here” and Roger spoke over the intro:

“It’s actually quite emotional - standing up here with these three guys after all these years. Standing to be counted with the rest of you. Anyway, we’re doing this for everyone who’s not here. But particularly, of course, for Syd.”

Then Gilmour and Waters traded vocals on the song, singing the chorus together (both playing acoustic guitars). Then Roger said “Here we go” as they went into “Comfortably Numb” with him singing the verse and Gilmour coming in on vocals for the “chorus”.

Their mic stands were set up about 15 feet apart from each other. The camera kept showing wide crowd shots inbetween songs, so we couldn’t tell if Gilmour and Waters were interacting with each other between songs. But from what I could see, they were smiling at the crowd pretty often but were not looking at each other (at least not making eye contact). Near the end of “Numb”, Roger turned his body toward Gilmour and was sort of playing to him. Gilmour didn’t reciprocate, stayed focused forward on the crowd. When the song was done, Gilmour thanked the crowd and turned to go put his guitar down. Waters reached out to him and waved him over to do a group line bow with arms around the shoulders. From the way the camera shots were edited, it looked like Gilmour kept looking straight at the crowd and didn’t look at Waters (who was immediately to Gilmour’s left). As the line-up started to break away, it looked as if Waters was turning to Gilmour to say something (with Gilmour still looking straight at the crowd) and then the camera cut away and we couldn’t see what happened. The next shot we could see of the band, had Waters exiting stage right first talking to no one. Gilmour and Mason exited stage right last and looked to be talking to each other.

If you notice at the end of Breathe, Gilmour sings the lyrics, “it’s good to warm my bones beside the fire” and I am almost positive that at that point Gilmour smiled at Waters and then the camera went to Waters smiling. Plus, the cameras aren’t on them all the time, so maybe something was missed. All in all though, a great performance.
